Frequently asked questions.

What is Direct Primary Care (DPC)?

Direct Primary Care is a growing healthcare model that restores the doctor-patient relationship by removing insurance from routine care.

Instead of billing insurance for every visit or service, patients pay a flat monthly or annual membership fee, which includes:

  • Unlimited monthly office visits (no co-pays)

  • Telemedicine visits when appropriate.

  • Same- or next-day appointments

  • Extended appointment times

  • Direct communication with their medical team via phone, text, or email

What about Medical Insurance?

At Prairie Rose Family Medicine, we don’t have the hassels of working with insurance—and that’s a good thing. By operating under a Direct Primary Care (DPC) model, we’re able to focus 100% on you, not on billing codes, prior authorizations, or insurance company delays.

Instead of navigating the complexities of traditional insurance, our patients pay a simple, transparent monthly or annual membership fee that covers unlimited monthly visits and direct access to their medical team. This allows us to offer longer appointments, same- or next-day scheduling, and truly personalized care.

You can still use your insurance for things like prescriptions, specialist visits, imaging, or hospital care—just not for services provided directly by our clinic. Many patients with all kinds of insurance plans find DPC to be the perfect complement.

Have questions? We’re happy to help.

Can I pay my bill with HSA or FSA dollars?

In many cases, yes. Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) can often be used to pay for Direct Primary Care memberships.

Recently, legislation has approved patient’s use of their Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) to help pay for DPC memberships.
Current guidance (pending finalization) allows:

  • $150 per individual per month

  • $300 per family per month in HSA dollars toward DPCx membership.

DPC advocates and physicians are fighting to lift these caps and fully modernize HSA access to relationship-based care.

We recommend checking with your HSA or FSA provider to confirm eligibility.

How about my labs, imaging and specialist care?

Many of the most common labs are included in your membership at no extra cost. For anything not included, we offer deeply discounted lab pricing, or we can bill your insurance if you prefer. The same goes for imaging: you’ll have the choice of using low cash-pay options or your insurance, whichever works best for you.

When it comes to specialist care, we frequently coordinate referrals and many of our patients choose to use their insurance for those visits. As your primary care clinic, we’re here to guide you through the health care system and help you make informed, affordable choices every step of the way.

Will you really be available through text, phone and email?

Yes, absolutely. We use a secure app called Spruce that allows you to call, text, or message the office directly from your phone. During office hours, you’ll have direct access to a member of your medical team for questions, concerns, or quick check-ins—without navigating layers of front desk staff. After hours, we’ll respond as soon as possible or first thing the next business day.

As physicians, we are deeply committed to your care—but we’re also parents, spouses, and active members of our community. While there may be times when we are not immediately available, we will get back to you as soon as we can and make your concern our priority.

We’ll do everything we can to help you avoid unnecessary urgent care or emergency room visits. But if you believe you are experiencing a life-threatening emergency, do not wait—go directly to the emergency room. You or a family member can notify us as events unfold, and we’ll be there to support you and follow up to ensure your care is coordinated and continuous.
